CONVERGENT LIGHTS

Saw Tooth Trusses, as mundane as it is, this long-span structure became widely used for industrial space for its potential of providing dynamic lighting conditions by introducing daylight strategically.

Both the library space and the gallery in the program requirement demand different lighting conditions. The Saw Tooth are converged and diverted to produce different lighting conditions.

Deja Vu.

As part of the process of gentrification in DTLA, the new cultural center located in the heart of the Art District proposal requires a new long-span structure in order to bring the reminiscence of the industrial history in situ.

Structurally, one single primary truss spans from the east end to the west end of this project. Along this primary truss, secondary saw tooth trusses merge and diverge.

Opening, perforation, and translucent material are placed strategically for the need of the program. Thus, three different spaces- educational, exhibition, and the central garden are created.

As the geometry of the roof transfers from mundane to dynamic, materials of gradients of lighting quality are applied. Natural lights that shaped by the roof are cast on the walls and floors of different spaces within the building — A fifth facade emerges from the top.
