Loop-Union:

A FRP Co-living Solution

Chosen as a featured project in the Los Angeles school exhibition 2020 in AD museum. It aims at using FRP to solve the housing crisis in Los Angles. For many young professionals who cannot even afford a single bedroom in the DTLA area, the most urgent issue simply having their own room.

Eye-catching in form while methodological in the design approach, It takes advantage of the tectonic of FRP material to create a cohousing living environment that maximizes the number of single bedrooms.

REVITALIZE OLD IDEA WITH NEW MATERIAL

While it inherits the concept of plug-in and plugs out as the metabolism project Nikkin capsule tower, the FRP tectonic eliminates the need of the steel-concrete core and allows the module aggregates freely.

A true metabolist architecture reincarnates in new material.

LIBERATED MODULATION

The project pays homages to Modernism Social housing Classic- Unit' d’ habitation in Marseilles.

Like Le Corbusier’s Unit d’habitation, a typical aggregation of Loop-Union shares one set of public spaces for every three floors. While, unlike typical concrete core structure, the public space is expanded and shared by more bedroom units thanks to the structural lightness of FRP.

A CURATED CO-LIVING ENVIRONMENT

Three levels of bedrooms share a typical module of space/unit.

Amenities and public spaces are spread on three levels. Frist level - dining and kitchen area / Second Level - lounge/bar and other entertainment / third level - study area/bookshelves, outdoor lounges.

RATIONAL BUILDING MODULES

Every FRP panel module should be <20’ length to maximize transportation potential. FRP panels then will be assembled in situ into larger modules

SPREADING THE PARADIGM

Loop-Union is not solely about designing one apartment in one site, but it is the design of a new FRP housing paradigm that allows it to be used everywhere in downtown Los Angeles.
